There’s a flower that grows roots in the snow And to pull it breaks open frozen caverns below Where the winds of hell crack their cheeks, raging and blowing And a human voice calling “I’m so deathly alone” It’s like the negative space - When you take it away And there’s another whole picture that the new light betrays. They say “pick one and paint over all the mess that we’ve made” As if we couldn’t smell shit if we can’t see the stain. And I don’t believe the world would be a terrible place If they dignified us with a liveable baseline. I’ve felt something like peace seeing sun in your face, I believe in good feelings hurt will never replace. And I’d like to claim part of you will always be mine But I know it’s just words, it’s only moments in time I want a life without fear and the good earth to thrive, I’m walking forward, hands open, with a new world in mind It’s like the negative space - When you take it away And there’s another whole picture that the new light betrays: They say “pick one and paint over all the mess that we’ve made” As if we couldn’t smell shit if we can’t see the stain. In that dream you said you saw me shoot a hole in the sky - you didn’t think twice when I urged you to climb scrambling up towards the puncture, past the clouds and the spires. I’ll earn that trust somehow if it takes till I die. And I don’t believe the world would be a terrible place If they dignified us with a liveable baseline. I’ve felt something like peace seeing sun in your face, I believe in good feelings hurt will never replace.

about

Aphir’s new single picks up where her 2020 LP Republic of Paradise left off, using the language of mythology to process injustices the pandemic has thrown into relief. She says:

"The welfare payments that were introduced during the pandemic lockdowns in Australia were a tacit acknowledgement that the barriers that prevent people from working can be entirely circumstantial, and that all people deserve to have their basic needs met, regardless of their capacity to work.

We live in a world where the resources exist to ensure no one has to be afraid of not having enough food or a roof over their heads but, instead, wealth is largely concentrated in the possession of a handful of billionaires, and diverted by governments into military budgets.

Negative Space condenses the anger and frustration I feel about this into a three-minute pop song. It’s an anger that intensifies as I see how starkly these systems stand in contrast with the kindness and ingenuity that humanity is capable of."

Where Republic of Paradise drew on experimental song structures and chant-like vocal deliveries, Negative Space sits more comfortably in the pop world, albeit with a darker textural palette.
